True Security; The Khashoggi Story

Its no longer news that a now deceased New York Times reporter was allegedly murdered in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey. In spite of the arguments and counter arguments one thing we would all love to see at the end of the day is that justice is served, and to this end I will be dwelling on the commendable security apparatus and expertise that has lead to the unveiling of some hard hidden truths.

The word security is synonymous with safety. Protection from perceptible and imperceptible threats. The level invested in the security of a state or a people is synonymous with their value for life. Security apparatus may not always be sufficient enough to avert danger, sometimes its inevitable, other times its collateral damage, but in peculiar cases like this, a therapeutic value of sophisticated security to help restore sanity. To provide closure and justice to families and friends of the affected.

If you have ever been a victim of theft or armed robbery, there are two major phases you will most likely experience. The first, how could I have prevented this, my instincts didn't make good on their use, other forms of self blame and so on. The second is the accompanying wishful thinking of apprehension of the culprit, which in most cases has an overwhelming sense of gratification.

My country Nigeria is behind when it comes to security, and from what i can deduce it has nothing to do with us being a third world country, rather its a reflection of the premium we place on human life. This nonchalant culture has eaten deep into our institutions; from lack of job security, health, finance, and so on, the list is endless. My only conclusion to this travesty is the non existent value for human life. One of the worst feelings one can experience is that of helplessness, that no 'one has got my back feeling, to site a few examples lets revisit, the Chibok girls, Leah Shuribu, herds-men attack, and more recently the Red Cross aid worker.

I employ the Federal Government of Nigeria and other stakeholders in the development of our dear country to refrain from fixing security with lip service and genuinely do something about it. The Khashoggi story should evoke an awakening in our security system to aspire for true growth, professionalism and procurement of modern equipment. Alluding to the Turkish homeland security system as the paradigm acceptable minimum. To provide a sense of value for every citizen of the country and ensure that the law is permitted to run its course without interference from any arm of government. To ensure that what is good for one is good for all, and above all, spare no cost in the pursuit of justice, this is the true meaning of security.
